We are Casey Whitlatch(Carter) and Ian Carter and we're out in the world pursuing a little context.
In 2009 we graduated university into a terrible economic climate. With no job prospects in sight, Ian stumbled upon a Yahoo!Jobs ad (that's right) looking for university graduates to come and teach English in South Korea. What was supposed to be a one-time, wait-out-the-recession deal opened a door and turned into a life calling. We did end up back in the Pacific Northwest (USA) after a tumultuous year of teaching and a wonderful month-long whirlwind around Asia and Europe (see the picture at right from 2010 in Vietnam). We settled briefly in Portland, OR and owned a little pizzeria for a couple of years. But, even one of the best cities around couldn't hold us. We headed out again, this time for China via the Czech Republic to get TEFL certified. Our intention was to stay for two years in Jinan, but the air pollution and low pay (we have student debt that we must consider) didn't allow for that. It was, however, a wonderful experience that led to my realization that teaching, be it in the US or abroad, is what I want to do. Ian always had teaching in mind.
On the Journal blog page, I'll/we'll chronicle our adventures (and shifting life directives) as we learn, work, live and play around the world. I'm Casey, by the way. Have a look around, if you like. Oh, and feel free to contact us (below) if you have any questions, general commentary or just want to chat.
One of our beloved pastimes is taking what used to be called "party photos" and are now referred to as selfies (darn youths) at landmarks or cool places. We try to take them in roughly the same position every time, because the results are rather amusing to flip through.
You can see Reeves, our Chinese rescue dog in that third picture and to the right. One of our other passions is animal welfare (Ian and I are both vegans). We're also enthusiastic about running, reading, global politics, coffee, tattoos and other stuff, too. But none of that is quite as cute as Reeves.
If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me below (or through one of the links at the far top right). You can also find both of us on Ello (@youknowcasey & @mrwayfare) and me on Instagram.
